Klára Davidson Spilková: Typhoon thwarted plans for a better result

Players who participated in the one-million-dollar tournament in Hong Kong gained an extra day off. The event of the Aramco Team Series had to be shortened to just two rounds, with only two players advancing to a playoff for the title. The title ultimately remains in China as the local player Xi Yu Lin claimed victory in a two-hole playoff against South Korea’s Jin Young Ko.

For Czech professional golfer Klára Davidson Spilková, known for her strong finishes, this meant taking the 21st position in the individual standings, where she finished after the second round, and the 16th position in the team competition. In both rounds, she managed to score under par, ending with a total score of -2 (72-72), and leaves Hong Kong just two shots away from top 10. In total, Davidson Spilková has earned 10,330 euros for her placements in the individual and team competitions.

“We had quite a wild day here today, but we knew since Monday that a typhoon would come. We just didn’t know when, where and how strong it would be where it gets to Hong Kong. In the end, we were actually lucky that it didn’t come on Saturday so we could at least complete two rounds. This morning, the tournament was definitively cancelled,” the player sent a message from her hotel room.

For the first time this season, Davidson Spilková played a tournament without her regular caddie and husband, Sean. She had to rely on a local caddie who was available at the time.

“He was a really nice guy from the local course, and I think we got along very well. He was easygoing and quickly understood that it was best to just let me do what I needed to do. So, he basically just helped with my bag and the flagstick and cleaned my balls. A really nice new experience,” the Czech professional golfer said about her collaboration with the local caddie.

Davidson Spilková will now take a two-week break before heading to Riyadh for another highly prized tournament in Saudi Arabia.

“I am flying back to Prague and then probably head to Spain for a week of preparation. But I don’t have a precise plan yet, so we’ll see how the weather is back home. It’s quite possible that I’ll play a newly added tournament in Mallorca before the final tournament in Marbella. But I’ll decide on that later,” Davidson Spilková revealed her upcoming plans.

In addition to Spilková, three other Czech golfers would otherwise also proceed to the cancelled final round. Kristýna Napoleaová achieved a great success who, as the captain, claimed the title in the team competition. This is her another significant result after individual victory in Berlin.
