Epson Tour: From Arizona to California
After finishing tied for 35th place on the Epson Tour in Arizona, Klára Spilková is looking to play at the IAO Championship in Beaumont, California (March 25–27).
The Czech golf professional is now returning to a familiar place. The Arizona and California events are the only two tournaments in the series, formerly named the Symetra Tour, that Klára Spilková played last year.
She improved at the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Classic this time after she had not made the cut last year. Now it’s time to return to the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, where she finished on a tied 52nd place last year.
Klára Spilková has arrived to California already on Monday to play at the JTBC Classic, Carlsbad in an attempt to qualify for the LPGA. Unfortunately, five hours of sleep after the flight from Arizona and a new course took their toll as Klára Spilková failed to advance from the field of 48 players, seeking two qualifying places, with 77 (+5).
“I’ve tried Morongo in the practice round and then on Pro-Am. It is not that long (5 968 meters), but very technical. When the wind starts to blow, the greens turn to stone, just like on Wednesday during the afternoon Pro-Am. The greens are also very shaped, and the ball goes downhill fast. I will only practice on the 9-hole course the day before the start and then do my best on Friday,” she said Klára Spilková.
The title in California is defended by German Sophie Hausmann, who finished fourth on the Ladies European Tour in Kenya in February this year and fifth in Arizona last Sunday, where she was even in the lead at one point. The previous year’s winner, Spaniard Fatima Fernandez Cano, won in Arizona on Sunday.
Klára Spilková will enter the IAO Championship on Friday 25 March at 13.38 local time from the first hole; the second round starts on March 26 at 08.58 from the tenth. The two rounds are followed by a cut and a final round on Sunday, March 27.
